Baby Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG might get SSK AMG name, will lose gullwings and power Posted: 07 Jan 2010 05:03 AM PST As we revealed a few weeks ago, Mercedes-Benz is definitely considering to expand the family of the current SLS AMG supercar, with a smaller brother (so-called baby version), which is set to duke it out with models like the Porsche 911. Now, according to a new report, it seems that the smaller SLS will receive the SSK AMG name, and will be the subject of quite a few changes, as opposed to its older brother. First off, it will have a shorter chassis, a smaller, most likely turbocharged engine, and, as a shock to nostalgic Mercedes fans, will lose the gullwing doors. The model, according to the same report, is scheduled to appear around 2014, as both a normal and a convertible version. Whether or not the rumor is true is still up in the air. Do you think that this so called SSK AMG is a good idea for Merc or should it do what it does best? Source: Drive.com.au via Autoblog Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

USA’s top 20 best-selling vehicles of 2009 revealed Posted: 07 Jan 2010 04:35 AM PST As with any beginning of the year, it isn’t time to look forward and prepare for our next year, but to look back and see just what happened in the last one. At least, that is what the team at the Examiner did in terms of what vehicles sold in the USA last year. As such, here we have the top 20 best-selling cars, charted over the last 12 months. It may not be your own personal list, but here’s on what the USA spent its car money during 2009. 20. Chevrolet Cobalt: 104,724 Interested in the remaining 10? Well you’ve got to hit the jump then (yeah, you hate us). 10. Dodge Ram: 177,268 And the number one spot goes to … *drumroll* The Ford F-Series, with 413,625 units sold in 2009, proving once again that pick up trucks are making good money in the US, despite the recession. Do you agree with the chart? Share your own thoughts below. Source: The Examiner Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

350 HP BMW 1 Series M car (M1) officially confirmed Posted: 07 Jan 2010 04:14 AM PST After much debate, rumors and speculations, BMW’s M division boss, Kay Segler, came forward and confirmed that an M car based on the 1 Series, which may or may not be called the M1, will appear around 2011. The new model will be powered by a 3.0-liter straight-six engine, which will receive twin turbochargers, taking its output to around 350 HP and 310 lb-ft of torque. The body will be that of the 1 Series coupe, with transmission being taken care of by a six-speed manual gearbox and an electronically controlled M differential. Expect an M Sport body kit to adorn the outside, comprised of revised and more aggressive front and rear fascias, while on the inside, an even sportier look than on the current top of the range 135i (pictured above). Also, BMW wants to make the car as efficient as possible, so expect a brake energy regeneration (KERS) system, as well as an Auto StartStop function. Overall, BMW is quite confident of this new baby M car, which will slot in under the M3 and, hopefully, attract new customers to the brand. Source: Autocar Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Video: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG graces cover of Gran Turismo 5, still no concrete release date Posted: 07 Jan 2010 03:59 AM PST The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is definitely one heck of a supercar, which will cost its future drivers quite a lot of money. But PlayStation 3 owners will be getting a chance to race this stunning sportscar for around $60, that being the price of upcoming racing simulator Gran Turismo 5. It seems that the already famous sportscar will be on the cover of the long awaited video game when it will actually appear, around March for Japan and summer of this year for the rest of the world. The stylish cover is quite appealing, showcasing the main attribute of the SLS AMG, its gullwing doors. Until the game will actually appear, you can enjoy the demo which is available on the PlayStation Network, and hit the jump to see this already released video of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG tearing it up on both the real and the virtual track. Buick Regal GS Concept officially unveiled, targets a whole new audience Posted: 07 Jan 2010 01:37 AM PST As we revealed at the beginning of the week, Buick will target a younger audience, seeing as how the average age of its customers was around 70. The new Regal, based on the Opel Insignia, will be just the car for the job, according to the GM-owned brand. But while some of you might have laughed at this possibility, Buick will certainly wipe that smile off your face with the new Regal GS Concept, which has been revealed yesterday, and will be showcased at the Detroit Auto Show. Based on the Opel Insignia OPC, the new Regal GS is definitely not your average Buick. Even though it won’t feature the turbocharged V6 engine from the European sedan, which outputted 325 HP, the Regal GS will definitely make plenty of people happy with the 2.0-liter EcoTec four-cylinder engine, which will develop 255 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque. As a pretty big surprise, it seems that a six-speed manual transmission is offered in the concept, but an automatic might appear in the final production edition. The Regal GS will be sending the engine’s power to all four wheels, which will feature a Brembo braking system in their 19-inch rims. The sporty nature (remember, it’s a Buick!) is highlighted on the inside, where drivers will be able to “play” with the Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) and change things like throttle response, steering or shifting, and sit comfortably in the Recaro sport seats. Bear in mind that this Buick Regal GS is still in concept phase, but will definitely appear after the normal Regal hits the streets in 2011. Until then, enjoy the photo gallery below. First Fenix supercar pictured and detailed Posted: 07 Jan 2010 01:03 AM PST As you might have heard a few months ago, Lee Noble, the founder of the pretty famous supercar brand has just started a new company called Fenix Automotive, and aims to become an even larger player on the high end sportscar market. Further testimony to his goal are the first two pictures of the Fenix supercar, which showcase a very attractive piece of machinery. And according to Noble, it will definitely perform the part, as it will be offered with a choice of two Chevrolet engines: the 480 HP LS3 or the 638 HP LS9, which is also featured on the Corvette ZR1. Throw those engines with in a body with a weight estimated at 2,645 pounds (1,199 kg) and you’ll be getting a monster of a supercar, which will go past the 100 mph (160 km/h) mark in just seven seconds, and stop at around 200 mph. While no official pricing has been offered, it is expected to cost much less than your average high end supercar. The new Fenix model is scheduled to appear at the end of 2010 on the market. Alfa Romeo to bring three new 159 replacement designs to Geneva Posted: 07 Jan 2010 12:35 AM PST Alfa Romeo is definitely betting big on the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March, as not only will it reveal the newly announced Giulietta hatchback, but also not one, not two, but three possible designs for the aging 159 sedan. And don’t think these designs will be switched up a bit, as Alfa commissioned the three biggest design houses in Turin, Italy, to create unique takes on the upcoming versions of the 159 sedan replacement. According to InsideLine, Stile Bertone will be developing a two door coupe body, Pininfarina will be handling the convertible edition, while Italdesign Giugiaro will be showcasing the normal sedan. Each of these models will be viewable at the stands of their respective creators. The 159 replacement is expected to receive a classic girl’s name, honoring the tradition of Alfa Romeo, with Giulia being the preferred choice. No word yet on how this new sedan will affect Chrysler or Dodge, given that Fiat now owns all of these brands. Source: InsideLine Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Electric Fiat 500 can travel 150 miles on a single charge Posted: 07 Jan 2010 12:19 AM PST New reports about the upcoming electric version of the Fiat 500 have appeared, pegging the autonomy of the city car to be around 150 miles (240 km) on a single charge of its lithium-ion batteries. The model, which might be showcased at Chrysler’s booth at the Detroit Auto Show next week, will see its agility dragged down by the heavy batteries, but will still be able to get from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in around 10 seconds, and up to 144 km/h (90 mph). The aforementioned batteries will be fully charged from a household socket in around 10 hours, but a higher power source could get the job done in more than half the standard time. Until the Detroit convention opens its doors, we can only guess about this upcoming model, but one thing’s for sure, the Mini E will have some serious competition on this segment as well from the Italian retro model. Saab supporters rally at GM headquarters, demand sale of Swedish brand Posted: 07 Jan 2010 12:06 AM PST In a last effort to convince the executives over at General Motors, a group of Saab supporters have gathered in front of the headquarters of the large automaker under one motto: Sell Our Saab. As you all know, the US corporation hit a bit of a financial black hole at the beginning of the year and needs to sell some of its brands. Even though the sale of Saab has been negotiated with quite a few buyers, Koenigsegg, a Swedish supercar manufacturer, backed down from the talks, and GM then announce that company would be closed down in the near future. Despite dramatic last bids from Dutch supercar company Spyker, things have seemingly remained as they were, with Saab continuing to enter the process of shutting down its factories soon. Now, this groups of supporters wants to attract attention and maybe persuade the GM execs that shutting down such a historical brand is of no use to them. Who knows if they voices will be heard or taken into consideration, but without an official word from GM, it might already be too late. Source: Jalopnik Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Dacia launches “Black Line” special edition in France Posted: 06 Jan 2010 11:51 PM PST For those of you not intimately acquainted with Dacia, Renault’s low cost Romanian brand, black was rarely featured as a color you could choose for your model. This was also the case with the recent batch of models like the Logan, Logan MCV or the Sandero. But not anymore, as the company announced the special “Black Line” edition, which will not only featured the color on the outside, but also flaunt black stitching on the inside of the fabric upholstery. Other features include electric front windows, power steering or audio commands on the steering wheel (remember, it’s low cost!). Basing itself on the Laureate trim line, the special Black Line edition will start at €9,600($13,827) for the Sandero, €10,950 for the Logan ($15,772) and €13,350 for the Logan MCV ($19,220).
