Video: New Porsche ad showcases its roots in racing, not posing Posted: 09 Jan 2010 12:51 AM PST Porsche has always been involved in racing, in one form or another over the years, with its high end sportscars borrowing heavily from its experiences on the track. This new ad further highlights the racing pedigree of the brand, saying that Porsche’s roots are in racing, not posing. Quite puzzling is the two new models, the Panamera and the Cayenne don’t even appear (what a shock!). In all seriousness, hit the jump to see the video for some vintage racing footage. Swiss Ferrari Testarossa driver fined with $290,000 for speeding Posted: 09 Jan 2010 12:43 AM PST Even though speeding isn’t encouraged, sometimes, when you’re in the right car, you just can’t help putting your foot down a bit. That’s probably what happened to a Swiss driver which took his Ferrari Testarossa on a run through the village of St. Gallen. Sadly for his wallet, he had an encounter with the police, which caught him doing 85 mph (137 km/h), and given that he is a repeated offender, charged him with excessive speeding. This is where things get rather interesting, as Switzerland gives fines depending on the perpetrator’s income, and given the net work of the driver being around $22.7 million, his fine resulted in a whopping (at least for us) $290,000. I’m pretty certain that the guy won’t really feel the fine, but it’s still one of the biggest recorded in recent times. Note to self: when taking a Ferrari out for a spin, avoid Switzerland. SMS Supercars introduces 620 Camaro tuning project Posted: 09 Jan 2010 12:26 AM PST The Chevrolet Camaro is one attractive muscle car, but more power is always a good thing, so Steve Saleen and his guys at SMS Supercars started modifying the model, and the result is finally pictured above: the SMS 620 Camaro. Using the Camaro SS as a base, the team modified the 6.2-liter V8 engine, outfitting a new supercharged, which now produces 575 HP and 600 lb-ft of torque. Also included are things like a special hood allowing for side induction, five-spoke wheels and Alcantara on the inside, alongside leather on the steering wheel. For those of you with a craving for even more power, a 620X model will be made, which will output 715 HP and 700 lb-ft of torque. While the project is still in the design phase, SMS says that manufacturing will start around the second quarter of year, just in time to showcase the powerful muscle car during summer. Peugeot reveals its revamped logo Posted: 09 Jan 2010 12:14 AM PST Peugeot is one of the oldest French carmakers, as it celebrates 100 years of existence at the beginning of this year. As such, the company needed to express its unique attitude and has revealed a brand new logo, which will be appearing on models starting with the upcoming RCZ roadster. The Sochaux Lion has been the emblem of the carmaker ever since its conception, appearing in one form or another over the years. The new badge bears a more 3D look, similar to what Citroen did with its dual chevron logo last year, when it celebrated 90 years of existence. Frankly, I think it looks pretty good, but the Lion is starting to look more and more like Godzilla. What do you think? Share your thoughts below and wish Peugeot a happy birthday! Volkswagen showcases the Amarok pick-up in the Dakar Rally Posted: 09 Jan 2010 12:05 AM PST Most rally fans are busy these days with the iconic Dakar competition, which even though changed venues, moving to South America after writing history in Europe and Africa, is still putting the limits of the drivers and their bikes/cars/trucks to the test. Besides racing its four Touareg models in the competition, Volkswagen is also busy testing out its new Amarok pick-up truck, which, as we reported a few months ago, is the official support vehicle for the rally. As such, all of the systems in the new pick-up are being pushed to their limits in between the stages of the tough off road rally. The model will first be launched in South America, after which it will cross the Atlantic to Europe. No word yet if it will reach US shores, but given the popularity that pick-up trucks enjoy there, sooner or later, it will happen. Source: Volkswagen Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

[Update]GM moves forward with Saab wind down but continues to evaluate bids from other companies Posted: 08 Jan 2010 07:39 AM PST Even though General Motors delayed an official announcement about its Swedish brand, Saab, for a day, after receiving last second bids from a few interested parties, it seems that the wind down process will continue to move forward. The US automaker announced that it has selected AlixPartners, a company specialized in liquidations, to supervise the wind down process of the Swedish brand, and ensure everyone involved gets treated equally, from the worker, to the dealer or the customer. GM also revealed that it is continuing to take into account offers from other companies for Saab, but hasn’t completely evaluated them. Either way, with or without new bids, GM says the wind down process will continue to move forward. Updated with union boss statement Even though GM says it will continue to evaluate other possibilities, Saab’s board of directors has decided to commence liquidation procedures, fact confirmed by Stefan Loefven, the head of the IF Metall union. “Today, Saab Automobile’s board has decided on the liquidation of the company,” he revealed, after talking with his board representative. This means that any last offers might not even be considered, with Saab being too far gone for anyone to save it. Source: GM Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:
