The 17th BMW M3 GT2 Art Car by Jeff Koons has been revealed Posted: 02 Jun 2010 02:30 AM PDT It’s been a long time coming, but BMW has finally unveiled its 17th Art Car project, based on the BMW M3 GT2 race car and led by artist Jeff Koons. For those who don’t know, BMW has started back in the 1970s a special initiative where it invited artists to design the livery for its 24 Hours of Le Mans race cars. Since then, people like Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg or Andy Warhol decorated the Bavarian race cars. Now, Jeff Koons has joined this privileged group with his own project. The artist combined various images of cars racing and vibrant colors to produce the illusion of movement, even though the car is standing still. The #79 (in honor of the 1979 Andy Warhol Art Car) race car is a BMW M3 GT2, capable of outputting 500 HP from its 4.0-liter V8 engine. It will be piloted by a crew of Andy Priaulx (GB), Dirk Müller (DE) and Dirk Werner (DE), while the #78 model, decked out in traditional racing livery, will be driven by Jörg Müller (DE), Augusto Farfus (BR), Uwe Alzen (DE). The car is currently on exhibit at the Forum of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and will be racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance competition between June 12 and 13. In case you’re not visiting France anytime soon, check out the 17th BMW M3 GT2 Art Car by Jeff Koons in the photo gallery below. Video: Ken Block takes on Kimi Raikkonen in rally showdown Posted: 02 Jun 2010 01:59 AM PDT If you’ve been following our Motorsport Weekend feature, you would know that last week the World Rally Championship (WRC) had its Rally of Portugal stage. At the event, besides the already known drivers like Sebastien Loeb or Mikko Hirvonen, rookies like former Formula 1 driver Kimi Raikkonen and Rally America driver/stunt man Ken Block also attended. As you know, Block, besides racing the Ford Fiesta in the Rally America championship, he has also been doing races in the WRC with the bigger Ford Focus. While he isn’t really breaking any records in WRC, Block is still showing a good pace. In the first stage of the Rally of Portugal, the organizers decided that something a bit more special was needed. As such, they organized a side-by-side circuit in a stadium, and pitted drivers one against another. Block was tasked with keeping up with Kimi Raikkonen, a task much harder than it seems. The actual race was extremely intense, so if you want to find out how it ended, hit the jump to see the video. In the end, they both tied with 2:11.0. Lamborghini begins teasing Murcielago replacement Posted: 02 Jun 2010 01:38 AM PDT Even though the Paris Motor Show is quite a few months away, carmakers are already teasing their big premieres. While Citroen fully revealed its new 2011 C4 yesterday, BMW is taking its time with the 2011 X3 crossover. Lamborghini is following in the footsteps of the Bavarian company, and released a single image through which it teases the replacement of the Murcielago supercar. From what anyone can tell, it seems that the car is ‘confirmed’ to have a bonnet, one with the Lamborghini logo on it, just to be sure. Anyway, rumors have been flying around since like forever about this replacement, presumably named the Jota. From an even more powerful V12 to an even lighter body, the new model is speculated to have the best of the best of what Lamborghini has to offer. Seeing as how the Murcielago became extremely popular and received a plethora of special versions and editions, its replacement has some big shoes/wheels to fill. Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTec diesel to join US lineup Posted: 02 Jun 2010 01:13 AM PDT Mercedes-Benz definitely wants to build up its image as an eco-conscious carmaker. As such, after the recent success of the S400 hybrid model in the S Class lineup, it is planning to add another, more efficient limousine to the range. The model in question is the S350 Bluetec diesel, the first oil burner in the US S Class lineup since the mid 1990s. The model will use the 3.0-liter V6 CDI engine and can produce 241 HP with 429 lb-ft of torque. But while performance isn’t its strong point, the S350 Bluetec uses a special urea injection system in order to drastically lower the NOx emissions from its regular exhaust. No word on what the fuel average will be, but you can expect the figures to be close to the 19/26 mpg of the S400 Hybrid model. While it is still a rumor at this point, you can expect a confirmation soon enough. Source: Benz Insider via Autoblog Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Video: Honda Civic takes burnout a bit too far Posted: 02 Jun 2010 12:53 AM PDT Ah yes, we’re pretty sure a lot of you have been wanting a new burnout fail for quite some time. After seeing a Dodge Neon or a Chevrolet Corvette fail at such things, this time we’re talking about an older Honda Civic hatchback. Contrary to previous burnout fails, this time the guy actually managed to keep the stunt going. Sadly, it seems the car couldn’t handle all that pressure and burst into flames. Check out the awesome footage after the jump. Source: FailBlog Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Chevrolet Volt to debut as a Buick in China next year Posted: 02 Jun 2010 12:41 AM PDT The Chevrolet Volt is General Motors’ big bet for its upcoming future. That’s why it is hedging its wagers and will release the extended range electric vehicle under its multiple regional brands. We already know it’s going to become the Opel (or Vauxhall) Ampera for the European and UK market, but also as a Holden Ampera, for the Australian one. Now, according to a new report, despite the fact that GM registered a patent for the Opel Ampera in China, it will brand it as a Buick in the Asian country. Why would it do that? Brand recognition, as Buick is GM’s best selling brand there. Also, seeing as how other Opel models were branded as Buicks (the Astra became the Excelle or the Insignia became the Regal), this wouldn’t be out of the ordinary. No word on if it will retain the Ampera name, but things are going to become much clearer as we approach the 2011 release date of the ER-EV in the Asian country. For what it’s worth, all of the Volt/Ampera models, no matter the brand, are still going to be made at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant in Michigan. Ford SVT Raptor R to get EcoBoost engine? Posted: 02 Jun 2010 12:21 AM PDT Ford is experiencing quite a massive surge of popularity with its new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, currently found in the Taurus SHO and the Flex, as well as on the Lincoln MKS and MKT. According to some new rumors through, the turbocharged direct injection unit might soon be making its way onto the Ford F-150 pick-up truck range, presumably with an output of 400 HP and 400 lb-ft of torque. Still, that’s not the most important news, as PickUpTrucks reports that the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 will be used in a new version of the desert-racing ready Ford SVT Raptor R. Currently, the SVT Raptor R has a naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8, capable of 500 HP. It is expected that the SVT team will squeeze every ounce of power from the EcoBoost unit to reach and even overtake that level of the old unit. When we will be able to see the result? According to the same report, the new race truck will compete in the Best in the Desert off-road racing series, as well as in the Baja 1000 later. Still, if a much-loved race truck like the Ford SVT Raptor R will get an EcoBoost engine, sales are going to soar for the rest of the EcoBoost range. Video: Honda promotes coupe models with IndyCar’s Mario Andretti Posted: 02 Jun 2010 12:01 AM PDT While you wouldn’t say so judging from its lineup of cars, Honda is a carmaker that likes to dabble in performance motorsport, from time to time. Ford unveils new custom graphics program for 2011 Mustang and F-150 Posted: 01 Jun 2010 11:48 PM PDT Ford has just decided to bet more on customization programs, seeing as how not a lot of people are content to have just a regular stock car blending in on the road. As such, it has just revealed a new Custom Graphics program, which lets you customize the exterior of your Blue Oval model to your heart’s content. While it was already available for some vehicles, the company has just announced that it has added designs for bread and butter models like the new 2011 Mustang or the F-150 pick-up truck. Customers will be able to deck out their future muscle cars or pick-ups with anything from the already ubiquitous flame vinyls to racing stripes or anything in between. What’s really interesting is that if the decals are installed in an authorized Ford dealership, then you get a three-year/36,000 mile warranty on them. Interested in customizing your own Ford model?
