| Lottery winner’s Audi R8 catches fire in the USA Posted: 13 Jul 2010 04:35 AM PDT  Sigh… here we are with yet another Audi R8 model which caught fire as it was rolling down the road. After seeing such cases happen in Germany, the Netherlands and even Romania, now the USA has seen its own R8 blaze. This time, the story is that much more interesting, as the car was just a week old, and belonged to an American who won the lottery some time ago. It seems that Rahul Patel, former Powerball lottery winner, was driving along in his R8 on a highway, when he saw black smoke coming from the rear of car, where the engine is located. As soon as he got out, flames immediately engulfed the rear of the R8. Luckily, Patel was the only one riding in the German supercar, and he got away from the fire right away. | Porsche 918 Spyder might cost around $630,000 when it will be made Posted: 13 Jul 2010 04:14 AM PDT  The Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid supercar concept captured the minds of everyone attending or even remotely interested in the Geneva Motor Show at the beginning of the year, as it combined a powerful gasoline engine with two electric motors that turned it into the fastest Porsche ever made. Porsche noticed the hype immediately and started teasing about the possibility of a production version of the 918 Spyder. This was enforced by a report from Bloomberg, which revealed that over 900 people issued letters of interest to the German company. Now, Bloomberg has revisited its sources, which now say that over 2,000 people are interested in the future 918 Spyder limited series. Better yet, this new report says that when it will be revealed, Porsche’s hybrid model will become not only the fastest model in its history, but also the most expensive, as it will cost around half a million Euros, or around $630,000. Even with that tag, we’re pretty sure the future Porsche 918 Spyder will sell like hotcakes. Now, if only we could find our checkbooks. At least this is what an intrepid Lamborghini Gallardo owner did when he was faced with this dilemma. He bought (or made) a bicycle rack and just strapped own the two-wheeled means of transportation. | Chevrolet now allows customers to build their own Corvette engine Posted: 13 Jul 2010 03:28 AM PDT  Customization is definitely an integral part of owning a car these days, with many people opting to order special accessories or options straight from the automaker itself. Now, as part of a novel marketing method, General Motors is taking customization much further, and has announced that for the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and ZR1, customers will be able to build the engines that will power their cars. Yeah, that’s right, for a hefty price ($5,800 plus travel expenses to Detroit), you’ll be able to build your own LS7 or LS9 V8 engines, which will power your future Corvette. Don’t go thinking GM will hand power tools to anybody without supervision, as a specialist from the Performance Build Center will be helping out the customer along the way, ensuring that the engine won’t blow up as soon as it is planted in the Corvette. | New Volkswagen Jetta Coupe leaked in patent photos Posted: 13 Jul 2010 03:00 AM PDT  Volkswagen impressed a lot of people with its New Compact Coupe concept, which was showcased at the Detroit Auto Show. As we saw a few weeks ago, the new 2011 Volkswagen Jetta generation borrowed heavily from the NCC, displaying the new design line of the rest of the VW range. Now, according to a batch of patent shots discovered by the guys at CarScoop, things will get even more interesting, as the German company is preparing a Jetta Coupe. As you can see above and below, these shots depict a model not that different from the NCC, but with a new front grille and rear fascia, now housing exhaust pipes, unlike the hybrid NCC concept.  Until we get an official confirmation from VW though, it’s best to take these shots with a small grain of salt. Still, seeing as how the NCC garnered a lot of positive attention, and how the 2011 Jetta has been received by the general public, we won’t be surprised if the Jetta Coupe will make its way to production in the following years. | Chrysler recalls 22,000 Dodge, Jeep and Ram models over brake problem Posted: 13 Jul 2010 02:46 AM PDT  Hot off some major recalls for other models, Chrysler has just announced another big recall, affecting some of its trucks and SUVs. More specifically, the 2010 Dodge Nitro, Dodge Ram 1500, Jeep Liberty and Jeep Wrangler models might have a problem with their braking systems. 22,118 vehicles are affected, due to a faulty flare on the brake tube that can cause brake fluid to leak. This tube connects the master cylinder with the hydraulic control unit, both essential parts of the whole braking system. Chrysler will begin recalling all of the affected vehicles in August. | Mercury might shut down production in late September Posted: 13 Jul 2010 02:34 AM PDT  Ford’s Mercury division will soon be no more, as the Blue Oval wants to focus on its more popular brand, Lincoln. Even though the announcement was made a month ago, no concrete details were given about when the Mercury production will be shut down, as executives limited to saying that at the end of the year, the brand will be no more. Now, according to a new report from Automotive News, it seems that Mercury doesn’t have much time before it will cease production. The Grand Marquis will be axed on September 30, followed by the Mountaineer on October 1, the Milan on October 2 and the Mariner, on Oct 3. With the production of the four models shut down completely, 1,712 dealerships across North America will also be left without a brand. Seeing as how most of them were joint Mercury-Lincoln establishments, it’s safe to say that most of them won’t be affected.
