VW Golf 6 Drops Its Top

Volkswagen Golf 6 Cabrio

The German automaker Volkswagen has revealed the first images and details about the Golf 6 Cabrio, a model that will have its official debut in March at the 81st edition of the Geneva Motor Show. I've always been a huge fan of the Golf, but at the same time I never liked soft tops. Unfortunately, this one has a soft top that has an electro-hydraulics drive that requires 9.5 seconds to open.

The Golf 6 Cabrio is based on the 3-door hard-top model and has just about the same design lines. The car will be available with 6 turbocharged direct-injection engines – two TDIs and four petrol TSI power units. These engines will offer a power output that ranges from 105 PS / 77 kW to 210 PS / 155 kW,

If you prefer gasoline engines, the car can be fitted with a 1.2 TSI that offers 105 PS, a 1.4 TSI that produces 122/160 PS and a more powerful 2.0 TSI that will output 210 PS. The selection of diesels includes a 1.6 TDI, good for 105 PS and a 2.0 TDI that will offer 140 PS. The 1.6 TDI engine will be available with a DSG dual-clutch gearbox.

The base price for the Volkswagen Golf 6 Cabrio will be 23,625 Euros in Germany.

Geneva Preview – EDAG Light Car Sharing concept

EDAG Light Car Sharing concept

EDAG has managed to bring together the concept of car sharing with the frugal mobility that is provided by an electric car. The EDAG Light Car Sharing concept is the successor of the Light Car concept that was revealed two years ago at the Geneva Motor Show.

This one features a GPS-guided system that permits a more sophisticated and efficient operation of a car sharing service as the provider is capable of tracking the locations of its cars and coordinating their schedule.

Although the car looks kinda "boxy" and flashy at the same time, it has those very practical two sliding doors along with sliding windows and can accommodate up to six adults which is rather cool in my opinion.

It also has a rear entry door that will certainly be useful. The concept was manufactured by using modular components that can be replaced very easy after the usual wear and tear. In order to keep the concept agile and light, those body panels were made out of lightweight plastics and fiber composites.

We can't tell you anything about the engine, but we do know that it has an axle-mounted electric drive system that is powered by a lithium-ion battery, offering a range of up to 62 miles (100 km) and can hit a top speed of 62 mph (100 km). The aforementioned EDAG Light Car concept presented two years ago was able to do 94 miles (150 km), although I really doubt that.

We'll have more information once EDAG will unveil the Light Car Sharing concept this March at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

The last thing we need: the StreetFlyer

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 12:12 PM PST

Our streets are crowded up the wazoo with all kinds of stuff, not just cars. Of course, it could be worse, but let’s not dwell on that. One of the things that most drivers hate is bicycles. They are annoying, keep popping up all over the place and should basically be banned.

But some guys with a lot of time on their hands and a need for… let’s say adventure, made what they call the StreetFlyer. This creature has 3 bicycle wheels and a kind of harness that keep you floating above the concrete. And the pedals are on the back. To us it seems pretty dangerous and we ruled it out like a time waster. We really hope that this particular prototype is never made.

Here it is in motion:

Does it make any more sense now?

Bahrain GP Cancelled

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 12:00 PM PST

You all know what happened in Egypt and Tunisia over the last few weeks. The protestors invaded the streets across the Middle East in an effort to get rid of the corrupt regimes. Unfortunately, this has affected the world of racing as the Bahrain GP will not be held. The Gulf state is the home to the Sakhir circuit that hosts this GP, and the organizers said "We felt it was important for the country to focus on immediate issues of national interest."

This weekend, the GP2 Asia Series race was supposed to take place here, but not anymore. The F1 season would have started with the Bahrain GP on March 13th, but we will have to wait until March 27, when the 2011 F1 season kicks off in Australia at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne.

2010 Korea RC Street Drift Challenge

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 11:37 AM PST

Drifting was born in Japan, in the All Japan Touring Car Championship races and we have many reasons to be thankful for this. I have the feeling that they can drift almost anything, but after I saw the video below I was fully convinced. I’d love for those Korean to teach me how to drift like that, because it’s pretty amazing to me.

Check it out, it’s very entertaining! And the music’s not bad also.

GMC Granite – Confirmed, Again!

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 11:30 AM PST

GMC Granite

About a year and a half ago we've said that according to MotorTrend, the GMC Granite will get the green light for production. Deja-vu some of you might say as the same source affirms that the concept we saw in 2010 at the Detroit Auto Show will enter its production phase.

GMC Granite

The same sources say that the car will have the same cool-looking rear-hinged suicide door setup that we saw in the concept. This time, the information comes from a "well-placed source" within the company, who says that the car will be manufactured on the same C-segment platform like the Chevrolet Cruze, Volt and the Buick Verano.

GMC Granite

When General Motors brought the Granite concept to Detroit last year, it had a 4-cylinder 1.4-liter turbocharged engine that produced 138 hp, just like the Cruze, linked to a 6-speed manual transmission. MotorTrend says that the car might get Verano's engine, which is a 4-cylidner 2.4-liter engine that outputs 177 hp.

GMC Granite

At this moment, these are only rumors and speculations. We'll have to wait for General Motors to either confirm or deny.

Audi A6 Avant Spotted Out In The Cold

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 11:00 AM PST

Audi A6 Avant

I've always been a big fan of the German estate cars, especially the A4/A6 Avant and the BMW 3-Series Touring. We already know that the sedan version of the Audi A6 will be heading out to the US this fall and the German automaker is already working on a hybrid version. AutoBlog's photographers managed to take a couple of shots of the A6 Avant, which will most likely have its official debut at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Audi A6 Avant

The new model appears to have a more rakish rear hatch design that will most likely lower the cargo capacity. Probably all the engines and transmissions available for the sedan will be carried over to the Avant version.

Most likely, the A6 Avant will still be sold in the United States, although the manufacturer hasn't delivered that many cars in the past, but I guess they know their math.

Audi A6 Avant

We'll let you know once more info surfaces.
