The diesel catalytic converter is vital in oxidising the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide present in exhaust emissions.
It also serves to reduce particle emissions (soluble elements).
A solid ceramic block is the most important single element - it uses a highly active platinum coating with an aluminium base.
