BMW diesel engines, such as the in-line four-cylinder in the BMW 320d, the straight six-cylinder in the BMW 530d and the eight-cylinder BMW 740d, combine dynamic performance with low fuel consumption.
Total consumption (combined): from 5.7 to 9.7 ltr/100 km. CO2 emissions combined: from 153 to 259 g/km.
Further information on the official fuel consumption and on the official specific CO2 emissions of new automobiles can be found in the guidelines on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of new automobiles which are available free of charge at all retail outlets and from DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Helmut-Hirth-Str. 1, 73760 Ostfildern-Scharnhausen, Germany.
To this end, BMW deployed the second generation of the electronically-regulated common rail fuel injection system, which can deliver pressure of up to 1,600 mb.
Values of this calibre meet the requirement for consistently high levels of pressure throughout the entire fuel injection cycle, something which improves performance and fuel consumption. The reduction in engine noise is achieved by pre-injecting several small quantities of diesel before the largest amount of fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber.
