Lewis Hamilton nabs pole position in Italian Formula 1 GP from Sutil Posted: 12 Sep 2009 07:41 AM PDT As you may have heard, if you read the first edition of Weekend Races, today the qualifying rounds for the Formula 1 Italian GP in Monza were held. After some free practices surprisingly dominated by Team India’s Adrian Sutil, the number one spot at the beginning of tomorrow’s race will be occupied by McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. The qualifiers were pretty intense, with quite a lot of surprises popping up. While many thought that Sutil won’t resist today, he proved them wrong and will now start in second place. But he will definitely have a tough fight on his hands tomorrow, as Kimi Raikkonen and Heikki Kovalainen will start behind him and Hamilton, both of which take advantage of the KERS system. Brawn GP holds the third line of the starting grid thanks to some great performances by Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button. The rookie team is still proving that the great races from the beginning of the season weren’t flukes. The fourth line is held surprisingly by Vitantonio Liuzzi, who is at his first race for Force India, and Fernando Alonso. Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber will be breathing down their necks on the fifth line after managing some decent times in the qualifiers. The rest of the drivers didn’t manage to set a time as various problems plagued all of them. The most shocking was Giancarlo Fisichella, which is at his first race under the Ferrari flag. The Italian was eliminated in the second part of the qualifiers and will start from the 14th spot. BMW Sauber isn’t doing to well as both Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica encountered engine problems and abandoned the event. Other eliminated drivers in the second round were Jarno Trulli and Romain Grosjean. The first round was also filled with many retired racers as Williams’ Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima both missed the second round, being forced to start from the 18th and 17th places, respectively. Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari were also disqualified, alongside Toyota’s Timo Glock. Overall, the qualifiers had some interesting results, meaning that we will see plenty of high speed racing tomorrow when the Gran Prix in Monza will take place. See you then.
