EDO brings forth the stunning Ferrari Enzo XX Evolution Posted: 18 Sep 2009 12:16 AM PDT The Ferrari Enzo is a stunning hypercar as it quintessentially represents what Enzo Ferrari wanted from his company, fast lightweight cars which could bring a smile to your face. But don’t go thinking that it can’t be improved, as the tuning team from EDO Competition has just revealed the XX Evolution edition of the Ferrari Enzo. I know you’re thinking, but what could they improve on one of the best Ferraris in history right? Well the team largely rebuilt the engine from scratch, keeping only a lightweight version of the housing, and swapped all of the standard pieces for even higher performance ones. This means that from a 6 liter V12 which could produce 660 HP, the Enzo XX Evolution has a 6.3 liter V12 engine, which can deliver a massive 840 HP (860 even, if you want to remove the final piece of the exhaust) with a torque of 780 Nm. Factor in the fact that the hypercar is lighter by 100 kilos, and this means that it will do 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.2 seconds, reaching 200 in 9 seconds and 300 in 19 seconds. It will go up to 390 km/h (242 mph) if you have a long enough segment of road. The team at EDO also tinkered with the transmission, which is now capable of shifting in just 60 milliseconds, as opposed to the stock one which managed the same feat in 110 milliseconds. To put that into perspective, a Formula 1 car’s transmission can shift in just 40 milliseconds. Also, for the suspension, the team outfitted the new Enzo XX Evolution with a special FIA GT one, which offers enhanced performance, but, in order to make it possible to drive the car on normal roads, they also fitted a hydraulic system to raise the nose of this true “monster”. Enjoy the pics, as this is something you most definitely won’t see everyday. Props to the team at EDO but also to Ferrari for this great car. 2010 Hyundai Sonata/i40 has been revealed Posted: 17 Sep 2009 11:59 PM PDT As you all know, the Frankfurt Motor Show has been filled with big announcements, coming from almost all of the big automakers in the world. Hyundai also joined the pack, and revealed the new generation of the Sonata model, which will be branded in Europe as the i40, thus entering the new branding from the South Korean car maker. The new sedan from Hyundai will be arriving next year all around the world, and will contain a revolutionary design, as opposed to the more conservative last generation. The midsize car will have longer, coupe-like lines, with an interior filled with technological trinkets and high quality, some of them borrowed from the ix35, the next generation of the old Tucson. Being bigger than the previous generation, the new car will also get two gasoline engines at first, with the 2-liter Theta II MPI already prepared to enter production and develop 165 HP, if it is running on gasoline, and 144 if it is fueled with GPL. When it will enter production next year, the new Sonata or i40 will also get a new 2.4 liter gasoline engine. Driver assists like Vehicle Dynamic Control, Hill-start Assist Control or Brake Assist will be incorporated in the new sedan, with a panoramic roof and a sideways parking assistance system, that will alert the driver of any obstructions. With production scheduled to commence in South Korea this year and in the United States and China in 2010, Hyundai is predicting that it will sell worldwide almost 450,000 units, by 2011. Recalls will be mandatory in Europe Posted: 17 Sep 2009 11:42 PM PDT Recalls are almost a normal part of the car manufacturing industry, as even the best markers can’t see potential problems when their new models go off the assembly line and straight to dealerships. That is why recalls for cars with severe problems are something mandatory in countries like the United States or Japan. Now though, it seems that they will also be mandatory in Europe, as a new directive passed by the European Union will force all automakers to recall their models which have encountered severe safety issues or can affect public health, road safety or the environment. These measures will be made once a special committee will asses the case and find out if the car maker is to blame for that fault. The aforementioned directive, 2007-46-EC from the first of May 2009, will unify all of the laws from the member states of the European Union and govern the car makers from each country. When the faults are fixed, the same committee will test some of the cars and make sure that the problem, or any other potential ones won’t appear and that they are once again safe to be on the roads. All in all, it’s great that the EU has finally decided to pass such a directive. Recalls are for the greater good and can save plenty of things, depending on the problems for which the car needs to come back to the factory. VW wants to make Polo Sedan, Estate Posted: 17 Sep 2009 11:23 PM PDT Volkswagen has some big plans for its small hatchback, the Polo, as product chief for VW, Dr. Ulrich Hackenburg, has declared to Autocar that multiple new versions of the Polo, including a four-door sedan or a possible Estate (Polo Variant), might be made. He said that the four-door version will have normal boot, not a hatch, and will be targeted at countries such as India, Russia or China. It will be based on a slightly longer platform of the normal Polo, and, if it becomes successful, might even reach European markets such as the UK or Germany. He also revealed that this is part of a new strategy from VW in order to make the Polo as popular as the famous Golf model, and it wants to achieve that by offering many versions of the car. The Polo GTI, which we reported on a few days ago, will also be part of this new strategy, by offering a model for the performance enthusiasts. But besides the this new saloon, VW bosses are also considering a people carrier based on the Polo, dubbed Raum, and an estate one, entitled Polo Variant. But seeing as how they are alternatives to one another, Hackenburg said that a decision will be made soon about what version will be sent to production, although he prefers the estate which “looks great”. Overall, I think VW will definitely earn some big money as the lower-priced Polo, in multiple versions, might reach bigger sales than the Golf, especially in markets that are still in development and in places where the economic recession has taken a bigger toll. Audi R8 burns to a crisp, only front grille remains Posted: 17 Sep 2009 08:37 AM PDT Imagine this: you own a fabulous white Audi R8 and it’s time to do your periodical maintenance at a registered service at your car dealer. You leave the car knowing that it is handled by professionals and that you will get it back better than ever. Then how would you feel if you’d have then heard that your precious supercar was found burned to a crisp on the edge of a highway? That is what happened to a poor unlucky Romanian R8 owner, which left his car in the service. After doing the regular maintenance, the engineers took it out to test all of its systems, but while on the highway, their laptop pointed to a malfunction and the cockpit began filling up with smoke. They immediately pulled over, but not a minute too soon, as the supercar was engulfed by flames, and all that was left, as you can see from the pictures, was the front grille, proudly showing off the Audi logo and the characteristic face of the R8. Effectively, the R8 melted on the side of the highway before any firemen could arrive on the scene. Be aware that this isn’t the first time R8 models have had troubles with fire. Here is the news story covering the event, but be aware that the audio is in Romanian. Read More: “Audi R8 burns to a crips, only front grille remains” Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Porsche boss wants an electric 911 soon Posted: 17 Sep 2009 08:05 AM PDT The Frankfurt Motor Show saw some pretty interesting statements from the CEOs of large automakers, from Ferrari’s Felisa saying the future hybrid will have a V12 engine to the most recent words from Porsche’s new president and CEO, Michael Macht, which said that his company is in fact working hard on electric-powered vehicles and the technology to sustain them. He expressed his confidence that in the future, an electric sports car in the Porsche lineup will be making an appearance. But this doesn’t mean that fans need to make a down payment soon, as the battery technology isn’t “sufficient to meet Porsche’s strict requirements,” but that “our engineers are already working hard on this challenge.”
Macht also took the chance to say that Ferdinand Porsche, the founder of the company, built the first hybrid 109 years ago, beating other inventors to the punch. Hopefully his legacy will remain and the German company will lead the pack in terms of performance electric and hybrid cars. Future Ferrari hybrid will have a V12 engine Posted: 17 Sep 2009 07:44 AM PDT For plenty of car fans the new wave of hybrids slowly taking over the streets of cities all around the world causes nothing but headaches, as it more or less means that big engines and the supercars which house them will become scarcer and scarcer. But how about a hybrid with a V12 engine? Because that’s what Ferrari boss Amadeo Felisa plans with the first hybrid from the Italian supercar maker. The model (which don’t worry as it is still planned to arrive in the more distant future) will mark a comeback for big engines, as Felisa revealed to Autocar that: “If we move to a turbo on the eight cylinders it’s not because we want to get rid of the V12s.” He also conceded that until battery technology will advance far enough to sustain a supercar but to also be reasonably priced, a Ferrari hybrid won’t appear. “We will work for the next three or four years on the technology and evaluate batteries,” said Felisa. But this doesn’t mean that the environment isn’t a priority for the Italian automaker, as the executive did reveal that the upcoming Ferrari California will have a Stop-Start system, which will give it a better fuel economy. “California will be the model that drives our innovations,” he revealed, “because we feel its customers are more concerned about these things.” Even though plenty of people will start complaining that these moves will make Ferrari stray from the path laid out by its founder, the move is something the automaker can’t avoid if it wants to stay competitive in today’s market.
