Not owning a car can make you fat, study says Posted: 23 Sep 2009 12:47 AM PDT Many drivers have heard from “concerned” family or friends that they shouldn’t drive everywhere and that sometimes they might want to walk from one place to another because it’s good for them. But a new study from members of the Journal of Urban Health magazine seems to indicate that if you don’t own a car, then you are more likely to visit nearby fast food restaurants, instead of the healthier establishment which are farther away from your home. Using data from the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Study database about 2,156 adults, the people doing the study analyst links between a person’s weight, the concentration of restaurants in the area and if people owned a car. As you can imagine, the highest density of both fast food and normal restaurants were in the lower middle socioeconomic status areas, while the very high areas had the lowest density. While on average car owners weighed about 8.5 pounds more than people who didn’t own cars, it seems that non-car owners, who were living in areas with more fast food restaurants weighed a whopping 12 pounds more than non-car owners in areas with less fast food restaurants. More importantly, and addressing the issue in the title of the article, it seems that the same non-car owners who were living around fast food joints weighed more than the car owners from the same area.
So there you have it folks, if you have a car, you might be able to escape the fast food establishments around your area and go to healthier places, but if you don’t, it seems that you have no other choice. Brabus Smart ForTwo Ultimate R: the ultimate pocket rocket Posted: 23 Sep 2009 12:01 AM PDT The Frankfurt Motor Show was Brabus’ time to shine in terms of new tuning packages. Albeit the stars of the show were the new Mercedes-Benz models, the E V12 and the SV12R, the German tuning house also turned its eyes to the humble Smart ForTwo city car, turning it into a true pocket rocket. Dubbed the Smart ForTwo Ultimate R, the new model will be the most aggressive one yet, with its supercharged three cylinder engine developing 112 HP at 5,750 rpm, with a torque of 150 Nm. This translates into a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 9.5 seconds and the small car will keep going until 170 km/h (105 mph). Besides the engine tweaks, the engineers also fitted flappy paddles in order to change the gears behind the steering wheel and a new exhaust system. Sports suspensions and new 18-inch allow wheels have also been added to make it more aggressive, alongside various carbon fiber bodykit elements. On the inside, everything has been wrapped in Alcantara leather with stylish red inserts. Overall, the new Brabus Smart ForTwo Ultimate R is looking great and guarantees to take you around the city in no time at all. Castrol implements new campaign to reveal the right oil for your car in the UK Posted: 22 Sep 2009 06:41 AM PDT While most drivers believe that the most important fluid in their car is the fuel, they tend to neglect the fact that oil plays an even bigger part in the “health” of their precious automobile. But sadly most of the drivers don’t really know what type of oil to put in their car and just go with what friends or shopkeepers tell them, sometimes ending with some horrific results or a damaged engine. That is why reputed oil manufacturer Castrol has devised a new type of campaign for its products, which not only promotes them, but also helps drivers know the right type of oil for their car. The video below shows UK talk show presenter and driving authority Quentin Willson, which appeared on Top Gear or Fifth Gear, revealing the new oil camera from Castrol. This new device will act as a speed camera, for example, but will record the license plate of your car, and in a few seconds will reveal, on a video billboard ahead of the road, the right Castrol oil for your car. The new system has already been implemented as a test around London yesterday. What do you think about the initiative? Don’t be afraid to leave a comment below the article. Ferrari drivers are seemingly handicapped Posted: 22 Sep 2009 06:07 AM PDT Finding parking spaces is a tough job, especially if you own a supercar which offers lousy visibility and is a tough to maneuver in small spaces. For these three Ferrari drivers, it seems that either they have given up on finding one and parked in the spaces reserved for handicapped drivers, or either they really are handicapped, which doesn’t explain their presence there, as the parking was just outside a golf club. Revel at the pictures which depict a Ferrari F40, F50 and an exclusive Enzo, with the latter two trying to pinch from the handicap spaces. Sometimes, it’s a shame that such people rob those entitled to those spots just because they have a luxury car and us “mortals” are way beneath them. While reports say that they occupied the places for a short time, it still doesn’t justify their deeds. AC Schnitzer releases first tuning kit for the new BMW Z4 Posted: 22 Sep 2009 05:52 AM PDT The Frankfurt Motor Show saw not only a lot of new releases in terms of cars, but also in terms of special tuning packages from the largest companies in the old continent. One exception, however, was reputed AC Schnitzer tuning house, which opted to reveal its first kit for the new BMW Z4 in a more silent way. But when we’re talking the improvements the team did to the new Bavarian roadster, then silent is the complete opposite. The experts at AC Schnitzer decided to tackle the 3.5i version, out of which they managed to pull 360 HP, thus taking the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.9 seconds, and up to a dizzying 286 km/h (177 mph). In terms of style, the company also respected its reputation, outfitting the new Z4 with a new front spoiler an chromed grille, as well as a rear spoiler and new exhaust tip finishes. In the inside, chrome was inserted with a lot of taste around the central console, the iDrive system and the pedals, in order to give a sportier feel. For a first attempt, AC Schnitzer lived up to the expectations, but perhaps we might see something more outrageous in the future from the tuning house in regards to the new Z4 from BMW. Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing will appear in Gran Turismo 5 Posted: 22 Sep 2009 05:28 AM PDT I’m sure many of you are also into video games as much as into cars, and this means that you might have heard of the Gran Turismo franchise, which has appeared up until now exclusively on PlayStation consoles. The next, highly awaited iteration will be Gran Turismo 5, which, sadly, still hasn’t gotten a concrete release date. But when it will be out, eventually, it seems that it will allow players to grab the virtual steering wheel of the newly released Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing, which premiered at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week. We don’t know if these images are actually in-game, but knowing the stunning graphics that the franchise has gotten us used to, they just might be. Hopefully this means that the team at Polyphony Digital is working hard on GT5 and will release it soon enough, perhaps at the beginning of next year.
