Geneva 2011 – Novitec Rosso Ferrari 599 GTO

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PST

Novitec Rosso Ferrari 599 GTO

As previously mentioned, Novitec Rosso has brought to Geneva this year their tuning program for the Ferrari 599 GTO, the most exclusive and powerful model from the Italian automaker.

Novitec Rosso Ferrari 599 GTO

What they've did is they took the car's massive V12 power unit and installed two superchargers, raising the output of the engine form 670 to a whopping 888 hp. Torque figures are also up, from 457 lb.-ft (620 Nm) @ 6,500 rpm to 636 lb.-ft (860 Nm) @ 6,600 rpm.

Although it received a lot of additional horsepower, the 599 GTO is only a little bit faster in comparison to the standard model, as it will do the 0-60 mph sprint 0.15 quicker at 3.2 seconds, while the top speed is a little bit higher at 211 mph (340 km/h). The car can accelerate from 0 to 124 mph (200 km/h) in only 9.1 seconds.

Novitec Rosso Ferrari 599 GTO

They've installed sports springs (not like the production version doesn't have those), very light forged rims that according to Novitec Rosso are among the lightest in the world. Measuring 21-inches, the front wheels weigh 22.9 lbs (10 kg) each, while the ones in the back are 22-inches and weigh 30.4 lbs (13.8 kg).

Novitec Rosso Ferrari 599 GTO

If you want to buy a Novitec Rosso Ferrari 599 GTO but you are afraid to drive it in the city, you'll be happy to know that the car features a front-axle lift function which will raise the front by 40 mm so that you will be able to avoid those annoying speed-bumps.

Novitec Rosso Ferrari 599 GTO

The car exhibited at the 81st edition of the Geneva Motor Show is wearing an exclusive silver paint that has a yellow cross stripe on the hood and white patches on the doors. This paintwork is a tribute to the legendary Ferrari 250 GTO that back in 1964 won the Tour de France. It also sports yellow brake calipers, blacked out taillights, a rear fog lamp, and third brake light and side markers.

Geneva 2011 – Hyundai i40 Estate

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 04:00 AM PST

Hyundai i40 Estate

One of the most attractive estate cars I've seen lately is the new Hyundai i40 which is based on the Europe-specific D-segment model. It was designed and engineered at the company's research and development headquarters in Russelsheim, Germany and it was created in order to fill in the gap left by the outgoing Sonata model.

Hyundai i40 Estate

It will have to face up some serious competition coming from the VW Passat and the Ford Mondeo. Later on this year, The Korean automaker will introduce a four-door sedan i40 which will most likely be exhibited at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Hyundai i40 Estate

It will go on sale this summer with many engine choices, like a 1.7-liter TDI that has CO2 emissions of only 113 g/km; or a 4-cylinder 2.0-liter.

Hyundai i40 Estate

Hyundai did not reveal more information about the i40 Estate, but if they do, we'll keep you posted.

Geneva 2011 – Gumpert Tornante

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 03:30 AM PST

Gumpert Tornante

At the 81st edition of the Geneva Motor Show, the German company Tornante brought a more refined GT-style version of the Apollo. Dubbed Tornante, it is the result of the collaboration with the Italian coachbuilder Touring Superleggera and it will go on sale next year.

Gumpert Tornante

The body engineering and the design were developed by the Italian coachbuilder, a company that became popular after launching the Bentley Continental Flying Star shooting-brake. The Tornante is a 2-seat supercar that borrowed some of the styling of the Apollo, but it looks more luxurious and less edgy.

Gumpert Tornante

It has very big frontal and lateral air intakes while at the back they've removed the big wing of the Apollo and now it looks more elegant. Inside there is a racing-style cabin, high-sitting rear-view mirrors. The SLS-inspired gull-wing doors have been retained.

Gumpert Tornante

The engineers over at Gumpert used an Apollo-derived space frame chassis and the same central power unit layout. After many weight-saving measures, the curb weight of the Tornante is only 2,866 lb (1,300 kg).

Gumpert Tornante

The engine is the same V8 biturbo 4.2-liter borrowed from Audi, that has been completely reworked and it now produces a whopping 700 hp. This power plant is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox that can change the gears in only 40 milliseconds. The 663.7 lb.-ft (900 Nm) of torque are available @ 4,000 rpm.

Gumpert Tornante

Although they didn't reveal any performance figures about the Tornante, they did say that their newest supercar is capable of hitting a top speed of over 186 mph (300 km/h).

Geneva 2011 – Kia Picanto

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 03:00 AM PST

Kia Picanto

Besides the fourth generation of the Rio model, Kia has also brought to Geneva the all-new Picanto. A first time for this model will be the availability of both a 3-door and a 5-door body style and according to the automaker; they expect that the first one will account for 33% of the sales.

Kia Picanto

Similar with all the recent models from Kia's lineup, the new generation of the Picanto has a more expressive design, both inside and out, comparing it with its very dull predecessor. The overall length of the vehicle has increased by 60 mm, and it promises to offer more space thanks to the 15-mm longer wheelbase. These increases, along with an enhanced interior packaging, offer the new Picanto extra 36 mm leg room for the passengers in the front and 27% more trunk capacity, offering 200 liters to store your stuff.

Kia Picanto

The car will be available with eight different packages for the cabin, including here two brand new environment colors – alpine gray and ebony black, four cloth choices, along with two additional "premium" trim packages.

Kia Picanto

For the European market, the new Kia Picanto is going to be available with a 4-cylinder 1.25-liter power unit that outputs 85 hp and 121 Nm of torque, along with a tiny 3-cylinder 1.0-liter engine that produces 69 hp and 95 Nm for the gasoline engine and 82 hp / 94 Nm for the LPG / Gasoline Bi-Fuel variant. The latter features an LPG tank that has a 35-liter capacity and a gas tank that has a 10-liter capacity, allowing the owner to drive the car for up to 93 miles (150 km) after he uses all the LPG. All of these will come as standard with a traditional 5-speed manual gearbox. The 1.2-liter 85 hp engine can be fitted with an optional 4-speed automatic transmission.

Kia Picanto

The standard models will have a CO2 rating of 95 to 105 g/km and will be able to do 39.9 – 55.6 mpg (4.2 – 5.9 liters / 100 km). Just like the aforementioned Rio, the new Picanto will be available with the company's Eco-Dynamics technologies: low-rolling resistance tires, upgraded starter motor, advanced alternator control and automatic start/stop), developed in order to reduce emissions to only 90-100 g/km and at the same time improve fuel economy, allowing the car to do 42 – 57.4 mpg (4.1 – 5.6 liters / 100 km).

Geneva 2011 – Peugeot 908 Hybrid4 Le Mans Racer

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 02:30 AM PST

Peugeot 908 Hybrid4 Le Mans Racer

One month ago, the French automaker Peugeot unveiled the 908 HDi FAP Le Mans Race Car, and for this year's Geneva Motor Show edition, they've brought the hybrid version of the car, which will take part in the 2012 edition of the 24 hours of Le Mans. Starting with this year, the Le Mans regulations make hybrid cars eligible for the competition.

Peugeot 908 Hybrid4 Le Mans Racer

This diesel-hybrid car was designed in order to comply with the newest racing regulations and will pay a significant role in the automaker's environmental strategy for this year.  The car has the same engine as the standard 908 model, but offers 80 hp more thanks to the electric motor that is powered from the stored kinetic energy generated while braking. For brief periods of time, this extra power is released automatically via the rear wheels under acceleration.

The recovered energy is stored in the lithium-ion batteries and this system will allow the 908 Hybrid4 to be powered only while in the pit-lane. The first track tests of the car are programmed for the end of this month and Peugeot wants to run the 908 Hybrid4 at the official pre-Le Mans 24 Hours test day on April 24th.

Geneva 2011 – Suzuki Swift S-CONCEPT

Posted: 03 Mar 2011 02:00 AM PST

Suzuki Swift S-CONCEPT

I don't know why but I've always been a huge fan of the Suzuki Swift. This tiny car is even better looking in this S-CONCEPT version that the Japanese automaker brought to the Geneva Motor Show. Based on the latest generation of the model which was launched in Europe last year, the concept is wider and lower in comparison to the production version.

Suzuki Swift S-CONCEPT

It features updated fascias, new blackened lights, a more generous rear wing and sits on 15-spoke 18-inch rims, covered by 225/45 R18 tires. Inside the cabin, they've fitted this Swift concept with sports buckets seats and some carbon fiber trim.

Suzuki Swift S-CONCEPT

Unfortunately they didn't reveal what engine they've fitted the S-CONCEPT with (maybe there isn't one at all). We do know that, at least on paper, it is a 1.6-liter engine that is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and the power is sent to the front wheels.

Alpina BMW B5 Bi-Turbo Touring

Those of you that want a fast car, but still need the practicality of an estate, Alpina has exactly what you need, the BMW B5 Bi-Turbo Touring. Based on the latest generation of the 5-Series station wagon version, Alpina tweaked the car's engine which now produces 507 hp and 516 lb.-ft (700 Nm). This massive bi-turbo V8 engine prepared by them accelerates the B5 from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 188 mph (303 km/h).

Alpina BMW B5 Bi-Turbo Touring

To provide efficient braking, Alpina installed 375 mm discs in the front and 345 mm discs out in the back. All that power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a modified BMW's 8-speed Sport automatic gearbox.

Alpina BMW B5 Bi-Turbo Touring

Other performance upgrades include a lowered suspension that has sports springs; big 20-inch lightweight alloy rims that are wrapped around in Michelin Pilot Super Sports rubber that measure 255/35 ZR20 in the front and 285/30 ZR20 for the rear wheels.

Alpina BMW B5 Bi-Turbo Touring

It also got a mild aero package that includes a new front apron, roof spoiler and a rear diffuser. Inside the cabin, it benefits from a bespoke leather treatment for the steering wheel and the sports seats, along with Alpina's blue gauges and exclusive decorative trims.

Geneva 2011 – Kia Rio

Kia Rio

The previous generations of the Kia Rio were very boring, but the fourth one that was just unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show looks very cool, just like the rest of the automaker's lineup. The new model is longer, wider, lower and looks ten times better. Thanks to the fact that it has grown in size, the Rio can now offer more space, more comfort and more storage capacity.

Kia Rio

The new Rio has a very interesting optional feature, called Emergency Stop Signal, which flashes the brake lights for three times in order to let the other drivers behind the car know that there is sudden braking to be had ahead.

Kia Rio

Although it is a tiny car, buyers will be able to get the automatic start/stop system, LED daytime running lights, heated seats, Bluetooth and iPod/USB ports.

Kia Rio

As we mentioned before, the new Rio is 20 mm longer, 25 mm wider and 15 mm lower. In addition, more space inside is offered thanks to the extended wheelbase that now measure 2,570 mm, which is 70 mm more in comparison to the previous generation. Cargo capacity is also up by 7% to 280 liters. A premiere for the Rio is the fact that with this fourth generation, the car will be available in both 3-door (in Europe) and 5-door body styles.

Kia Rio

For the European market, the Kia Rio will be offered with a choice of three and four-cylinder engines that will have a power output from 70 to 90 hp and a CO2 rating of only 85 g/km. Fuel consumption will also be extremely low as the car will be able to do 73.5 mpg (3.2 liters / 100 km).

Kia Rio

If you prefer diesels, Kia will offer a 1.1-liter power unit that produces 70 hp and 162 Nm of torque, as well as a more powerful 1.4-liter plant that churns 90 hp and 216 Nm of torque. The most powerful engine will be a 1.4-liter gasoline plant that will output 109 hp and 136 Nm, allowing the Rio to do the 0-60 mph sprint in 11.5 seconds, onto a top speed of 112 mph (181 km/h). There is another engine, a 1.25-liter power unit that has 85 hp and 118 Nm and will do 49 mpg (4.8 liters / 100 km).

Kia Rio

The standard Kia Rio models will have CO2 emissions of 94-to-124 g/km. However, for the European-spec model, customers can get the car with the optional ISG technologies, like advanced alternator control, automatic start/stop, low-rolling resistance tires and upgraded starter motor – all of them allowing the Rio to have CO2 emissions from 85-to-114 g/km and a fuel consumption of 3.2-4.8 liters / 100 km.

Kia Rio

As standard, the fourth generation of the Rio will be fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox, except for the 1.25-liter 85 hp engine which will get a 5-speed transmission and the 1.4-liter 109 plant that can be mated to a 4-speed automatic gearbox (optional feature).
