The Buick Regal, North America's Opel Insignia, will return to showrooms

Good news for North Americans, as General Motors has just unveiled to dealers across the United States and Canada that the new mid-size sports sedan in the Buick range will be none other than the Regal, whose production ended in 2004.

After spending a bit of time in China, were it was re-released last year, it seems that the model, based on the Opel Insignia, will be returning to the Americans once more. While not confirmed by Buick just yet, the model might be offered with engines like 1.6-liter, 2-liter or 2.8-liter gasoline ones and various 2-liter diesel ones. We’ll offer more details as soon as we know them.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E Class Convertible revealed in the first design sketches

Well it’s official now folks, it seems that Mercedes-Benz will chop away the top of the current generation E Class Coupe and release a convertible E Class Cabrio in the first half of 2010. The German company has just registered the design at the European Patent office and, as usual, the sketches were leaked on the Internet.

Set to rival the BMW 3 Series Cabrio, this new model will be the replacement for the old CLK model and will take advantage of all of the engines currently available for the coupe version. This further highlights the “Jack of all trades” aspect of the current E Class, becoming its most mainstream model, ahead of the C Class.

No more details were given, except the fact that it will sport a folding cloth top, instead of a regular one. What do you think? Does this new Mercedes convertible have what it takes to go up against BMW or Audi? Leave a comment with your thoughts.

Audi shares more details on the future A1, says different body versions will arrive

Audi shares more details on the future A1, says different body versions will arrive

Audi is definitely keen on taking the fight to BMW in the premium segment and an important role will be given to the future A1 city car, which will be revealed in the following years. Talking with Car magazine in the UK, the sales director for the German company, Peter Schwarzbauer, revealed a few more details on what types of bodies we will see the A1 sport.

“We will start with the three-door version with several different engine variants,” Schwarzenbauer revealed to the English magazine. “Will we do further models? Look at what we do with the A3 range - we could something similar with the A1.”

This means that we might expect models from three to five-doors and even stations wagons, no to mention a convertible one. In terms of engine, rumors place the gas-powered 1.2-liter and 1.8-liter turbo motors in the future car, alongside the 1.6-liter TDI unit. We might also expect an electric version which will counter the similar versions of the Mini and the Smart. For enthusiasts, maybe a top of the range S1 might also be made.

Bear in mind that this is still speculation, so we can’t know for sure that the Ingolstadt manufacturer has planned for its entry-level city car. Stay tuned in the following months for more details as they will appear.

Ford issues biggest recall in history over faulty cruise control switch which can lead to fire

In case you have an old Ford car or SUV, then you might want to pay attention, especially is you have a cruise control system on it. The North American company has just issued one of its biggest recalls in history, focusing on 4.5 million cars, due to a faulty cruise control switch which can burst into flames if brake fluid were to make contact with it.

The danger is also quite high even if the car is parked, so Ford decided to address this problem even though no formal complaints or accidents of such sort were recorded as of yet. Until the recall letters are sent to all Ford owners, the company recommends that owners should park the car outside and be sure to check the battery, ABS and cruise control system for any malfunctions.

The models affected by this problem are: SUVs and pick ups: 1997-2002 Expedition; 1998-2002 Navigator; 2002-2003 Blackwood; 1993-1996 Bronco; 2000-2003 Excursion (built before 11/4/02) ; 1992-2003 Econoline E-150/250/350; 1996-2003 Econoline E450; 2002-2003 Econoline E550; 1998-2002 Ranger; 1998-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer; 2001-2002 Explorer Sport; 2003-2004 F-150 Lightning; 1993-2003 F-Series; 1993-2003 F-Series with the exception of those built at the Cuautitlan plant; 1994-2003 F-Series built at the Cuautitlan plant before 1/7/03; 1995-2002 F-53 Motorhome; Cars: 1992-1998 Town Car; 1992-1998 Crown Victoria; 1992-1998 Grand Marquis; 1993-1998 Mark VIII; 1993-1995 Taurus SHO (automated transmission); 1994 Capri;

Ferrari’s sending workers home for one week in November

Ferrari's sending workers home for one week in November

We all know there’s a recession going on, some have even felt it in not-so-pleasant ways, but it seems that this drop in spending power has even affected the rich people, as Ferrari has just announced that because of low demand in the following time frame, the end of 2009 and beginning of 2010, it will send home many of its workers for one week.

This doesn’t mean that the Maranello plant will be empty, as the announcement focuses on those working in the engine manufacturing and paint department. Approximately 15% of the workers for the Italian company will be staying home between 9 and 13 November, and will return after that period.

This measure aims at reducing costs but also keeping the jobs of the current people employed by Ferrari at the manufacturing plant. Hopefully things will pick up in the future and such cases of sending people home will be a thing of the past.

MTM takes VW Golf GTI to 270 HP

Not content with the stock 211 HP that the Volkswagen Golf GTI offers, and also not happy with waiting for the upcoming Golf R to be available on the market, German tuning house MTM (Motoren Technik Mayer) has just revealed a new performance and visual kit for the sixth generation of the Golf GTI.

Through some heavy tinkering and engine upgrades, the team managed to get the new Golf GTI to performance levels equal to the future Golf R, meaning figures around 270 HP and a torque of 400 Nm. The new, electronically limited maximum speed is now 265 km/h, and, according to MTM, the upgrades have in no way reduced the life span of the GTI’s 2-liter engine.

Other modifications include a new Brembo braking system which have eight-piston calipers around 380 mm discs and a new set of MTM Bimoto 19-inch rims, wrapped in Continenatl XL Sportcont tires. Overall, if you are very fond of the GTI and want to increase its performance, then you should really consider this package.

Car companies are getting with the times, and right after Mercedes-Benz announced that it has launched an application for the iPhone and iPod Touch through which customers can pay their lease fees, car alarm company Viper has also revealed that it launched a new app for the Apple devices which can start your engine no matter where you are.

The new technology has two parts: the first is the iPhone app which can be downloaded and used for free in the first year but starting with the second will cost $30, and the SmartStart module for the car. In case you already have a Viper alarm, you only need the module which costs a hefty $300, and in case you don’t have an alarm, you’ll have to pay $500.

This new app will broadcast your signal to the SmartStart module through either the AT&T network or the WiFi connection, in case of the iPhone and iPod Touch respectively. Enjoy the video below which shows you just how it all works.
