Seat planning Leon Coupe, new Alhambra, Tribu crossover and other models

Seat planning Leon Coupe, new Alhambra, Tribu crossover and other models

Spanish carmaker Seat is definitely not resting on its laurels after producing one of the most successful lineups of cars since it entered under the Volkswagen AG corporate umbrella, as the boss of sales and marketing, Jan Lafrentz, revealed that a lot of new models will appear in the following years from the automaker.

Among the new models will be a Coupe version of the Leon, a new Alhambra MPV people-carrier, crossover based on the Tribu concept and even its own version of the Volkswagen Up!, which will be revealed next year.

Let’s start with the Leon shall we? The Spanish hot hatch will be on the receiving end of a coupe model, in vein with what Volkswagen did with the Golf and the Scirocco. It will borrow a lot of things in terms of design and will definitely cater to a more exclusive market, when it will be released at the beginning of 2011.

Until then, the company revealed that it will once again attack the MPV (multi purpose vehicle) market, where the Ford Galaxy reigns supreme. The new replacement for the Alhambra will target the consumers who are very loyal to the brand and Lafrentz revealed that it will definitely be successful in taking care of said user base.

The Seat executive also tackled the company’s version of the Volkswagen Up city car, saying that it might arrive in late 2010, early 2011, and that an electric version might also be made, but it will be expected to sell in a limited quantity.

Another area of the market where the company is eager to appear is the crossover one, by releasing a production model of the Tribu concept, probably based on the VW Tiguan, which will rival successful city crossovers like the Nissan Qashqai. “The Tribu has been under discussion since we showed the concept,” said Lafrentz. “There is great willingness within Seat to make it, but the final decision has not been taken yet.”

While sources indicate that other current models might get 4×4 traction and receive the Freetrack label, Lafrentz was eager to deny any rumors about a convertible version, possibly based on the Tango concept or the Exeo midsize sedan, by saying that Spanish people don’t really like convertible cars.

Are you excited about these new models? Drop a comment with your thoughts.

Volkswagen’s newest Fun Theory video reveals the world’s deepest rubbish bin

Posted: 20 Oct 2009 04:12 AM PDT

Perhaps you may have heard about Volkswagen’s newest Fun Theory marketing campaign, which reveals that people’s behavior can be changed quite easily if we provide fun alternatives to things they rather won’t do. We’ve already seen how it can make people take the stairs more often in favor of the escalators, and now, once again in Sweden, the company decided to persuade people to use the rubbish bins in parks.

How can you do that? By making the world’s deepest bin that’s how. Now don’t go thinking the carmaker actually began to dig a litter bin or something. It just added two speakers and a falling noise to one of the bins, in order to make it sound like the piece of trash is falling a very long way.

The result speaks for itself, the sanitation company managed to collect over 72 kilograms (158 pounds) of trash, with 41 kgs (90 lbs) more than the regular trash can collects in a day. See for yourself the reactions the innovative idea has among park-goers in the video below.

See the world’s luckiest rally driver escape a terrifying crash

Posted: 20 Oct 2009 01:58 AM PDT

Rally driving is one of the most dangerous motorsports out there, largely because most of the races happen in real life roads, filled with dangerous obstacles and where every crash could mean some nasty results for the driver and his co-pilot.

Such is the case with this lucky guy, who spun out during a special stage in a forest and nearly got impaled by a tree trunk. Fortunately it just missed him, and he was quick to remove it and continue the race, showing his dedication to the sport. I still can’t escape the “Final Destination” feeling of this video. Watch it for yourself.

2010 Skoda Fabia vRS to get 180 HP gasoline engine, debuts next year

The competition in the small hot hatchback market is definitely a tough one, and will become even tougher as a Skoda source revealed that the upcoming Fabia vRS performance model will be a massive step up from the previous generation and offer a 180 HP gasoline engine, borrowed from the Seat Ibiza Cupra, the VAG cousin of the Czech model.

The new Skoda Fabia vRS will appear on the market next year, and will benefit from a more aggressive design, revealing the performance-inclined nature of the vRS as opposed to the regular Skoda Fabia models. The engine will take it from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in around 7 seconds and to an impressive top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph). It will be most likely attached to a seven speed DSG gearbox, with paddles on the back of the steering wheel.

In terms of price, expect the 2010 Skoda Fabia vRS to cost around €17,500 or £16,000 when it will be made released.

Tuned Smart ForTwo goes drifting in Japan, we’ve got the video to prove it

Posted: 20 Oct 2009 01:08 AM PDT

When you think about drifting, one’s mind goes to classic Japanese models like the Toyota AE86, the Nissan Silvia or the Toyota Supra, or American muscle cars like the Ford Mustang. But what about a Smart ForTwo?

No, we’re not joking or smoking anything illegal, a team of Japanese tuners actually saw a lot of potential in the tiny city car from Mercedes-Benz and outfitted one with a variety of performance parts. From enlarging the wheel arches to fitting custom tires and an impressive exhaust system which spits out fire as it traverses around the track.

The result? A stunning video which really raises my opinion of the small city car and the great work that both the engineers at Mercedes-Benz and at the Japanese tuning company achieved. Enjoy!

Hybrid and electric vehicles to be forced to make engine noises?

Posted: 20 Oct 2009 12:54 AM PDT

A silent killer?

The hybrid and electric car revolution has brought forth a lot of interesting debates. From the efficiency of the batteries, to how much the environment is damaged when making such a car or what type of power should be used.

But one new question is quickly becoming more and more important, not only in the public media but also in the governments of many countries. Should hybrid and electric cars be forced to make noises associated to a regular car?

Imagine this, you are walking down the road, perhaps with headphones in your ears and listening to your favorite songs, and you want to cross the road, but forget (for the sake of this example) to double check, relying only on your sense of sound. According to a study made by the University of California, people were able to hear normal cars from as far as 28 feet (8.5 meters), while silent-running electric ones were barely noticed at 7 feet (2 meters).

This could lead to quite a few accidents, and now the US government is considering imposing a “minimum noise” standard, as to “warn” others of the vehicle’s presence. It will also be a balancing act, as cars also need to prevent noise pollution. This has led to many companies already considering sound systems, like the Fisher Karma, which will have speakers in its bumpers. Other companies will deliver multiple types of engine sounds, or even the possibility to upload your own, in order to inform others.

What do you think? Should hybrid and electric cars be left silent or should we hear the Toyota Prius as an Aston Martin supercar? Leave a comment with your opinion.

Custom Dodge Ram Bianco HEMI V8 to be showcased at SEMA by Mopar

The new Dodge Ram 1500 Sport sure is something with its HEMI V8 engine and aggressive looks, but what about something that shows a bit more exclusivity?

That’s just what the team at Chrysler’s Mopar division thought when they revealed that the Dodge Ram Bianco concept, which will be presented at the end of the week in Las Vegas at the SEMA show.

Boasting a special Arctic Ice pearl paint, the Bianco will be outfitted with various Mopar performance kits like a cold-air intake and a new exhaust system. It will also boast modified fender flares, and a new set of 22-inch dark finished alloy wheels which provide an even more aggressive look when combined with the lowered suspension.

On the inside, the Mopar team really went to town, and fitted black and white Katzkin seats, that match the door trims, and threw in Piano Black and Arctic Ice inserts around the cabin. The audio system has also been upgraded with a special Kicker system, consisting of an amplifier, a subwoofer and new speakers.

Expect this exclusive Dodge Ram to be presented at the end of the week.

Hear the engine of the 9ff Porsche Panamera in this video

Posted: 19 Oct 2009 07:37 AM PDT

The Porsche Panamera is definitely one of the most talked about models in past few months, largely due to the fact that everyone, from Porsche to traditional tuners who modify models from the German company have been trying to reveal the sedan’s sporty nature.

In case you forgot, just before the official release, 9ff revealed its first sketches of a tuning and bodykit package for the model. Now, after more than a year since those sketches, the first video of the 9ff Panamera, with upgraded sports exhaust system and 22-inch wheels has surfaced.

It is still a prototype though, but the sound of the engine through the modified exhaust is definitely out of this world. Enjoy the video and expect the tuning package to appear sometime next year.
