Joy is BMW campaign inspires Romanian artist to create BMW Z4 out of origami paper cranes Posted: 28 Oct 2009 03:26 AM PDT We’ve covered BMW’s newest marketing campaign “Joy is BMW” by revealing the ads that highlight the Bavarian carmaker’s newest attitude towards its customers by rewarding them with the best driving experiences on the market. This campaign also contained a competition among artists from Romania, which challenged them to bring to life this interesting concept. One Alexandru Mirea had a truly unique approach to this, and chose to recreate his favorite model, the BMW Z4, by using paper. Fine, what’s so special about making a paper car? Well how about decorating it with over 4,000 paper cranes made through the traditional Asian craft of origami? Alex, after spending 15 days and in 5 pulling all-nighters, managed to create a life-size replica of the hot Bavarian roadster. Midway through the assembly, he decided to recreate a more interesting scene, by making the car seem like it is sliding and accents the speed through the rear of it, which seems to disintegrate. Overall, this is certainly a unique take on BMW models, and one which will leave a mark on many people. Hit the jump to see the video of how the assembly process went, and if you want more details on the build, you can check out this document, but it is in Romanian.

Toyota might prepare a Prius coupe to rival Honda’s CR-Z sports hybrid Posted: 28 Oct 2009 03:03 AM PDT Well it seems that things are heating up on the hybrid car segment, as according to recent rumors, Toyota is preparing a coupe version of its 2010 Prius model which will go head to head against Honda’s upcoming CR-Z hybrid sports coupe. This will go hand in hand with the plans of the Japanese carmaker to develop the Prius brand and release more types of vehicles, including, besides this new coupe, an MPV or even a pick-up. While it is expected for the sports model to have the same mechanics and 1.8 liter VVT-i engine, which develops 134 HP, it seems it will be put on a drastic diet to shave some weight and see its suspension tuned for a better handling. No matter what the modifications, more performance hybrid models might be just what the segment needed to become even more popular, not only with the eco-conscious crowds. What do you think? Will performance hybrids make you more interested in this type of cars? Share your view by leaving a comment. Source: Autocar Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport to debut at Geneva Motor Show in March 2010 Posted: 28 Oct 2009 02:38 AM PDT It seems that Mitsubishi will make its presence felt on the compact crossover market starting with next year, as its Outlander model will receive a smaller brother, based on the Lancer platform. Dubbed the Outlander Sport, it will be smaller and target the niche for people who want something with a bigger presence, but don’t want to get a big bulky SUV. Sadly no details are known, except for the fact that the model will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, in March 2010, and that it will debut on the European market soon after that, with North American shores seeing the new Outlander Sport at the end of next year. No word yet on what engines it will see, but we can tell from the recent Px-MiEV concept that a hybrid drivetrain could appear for it, if not at the launch, then further down the road. Besides this, we should except some smaller and economical gasoline and diesel ones, which will be more than adequate for the city dweller at which the Outlander Sport is targeted. Will the future Mitsubishi Outlander Sport peak your interest? Leave a comment below. Source: Automarket Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Nissan recalls over 163,000 Rogue models due to possible steering malfunction Posted: 28 Oct 2009 02:26 AM PDT Nissan and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have just revealed that due to a possible fault to the steering system, some serious problems might appear to any of the 2008 or 2009 Rogue crossover models. It would seem that due to a screw that might get loose, the steering wheel will being to be less responsive to sudden moves, and might even not work altogether, if the screw falls out. As such, Nissan will start in November to recall any Rogue models which have this certain screw (that is about 163,659 cars) back to the dealers. In case you are already experiencing steering issues or the thought of this possible malfunction gives you the creeps, then you should visit your Nissan dealer right away. Posted: 28 Oct 2009 01:40 AM PDT In case you haven’t heard, Volkswagen is deeply committed to automotive innovation, as it has just funded its Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab on the campus of the prestigious Stanford University over $5 million. Up until now though, the innovations have been tested through government-sponsored competitions like the DARPA Grand Challenge. But now, the team at the research lab has its sights set on something much bigger, as it plans to run its driver-less Audi TT-S up the Pikes Peak rally course, just like a normal rally pilot would do it, with powerslides and drifts. In order to get the attention of people, the team has already released a video in which it reveals that tests it did with the special Audi at the Bonneville Salt Flats, and a bit of history of the famous Audi Quattro going round the Pikes Peak rally course in the early 1980s, counting for the famous Group B rally stages. Hit the jump to see this video which is guaranteed to get you excited about this challenging project. Let’s hope the team can do it, and we will see driver-less rallies in the future.

Lingenfelter 455 TA, a Pontiac Trans Am concept based on 2010 Camaro, set to appear at SEMA Posted: 28 Oct 2009 01:18 AM PDT Well here’s a certain blast from the past, it seems that tuning and customization company Lingenfelter has decided to revive the glorious Pontiac Trans Am, basing itself on the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro model. Dubbed the 455 TA, it takes many of its styling cues from the 1971 Trans Am (not the famous Firebird one), and is powered by a massive 455 cubic inch (hence the name) engine, or for non-American readers, a 7.5-liter V8 with 655 HP and a torque of 610 lb-ft (826 Nm). Although we only have a few sketches of the model, it is looking pretty good, giving the new Camaro a redesigned front fascia and rear end, a set of 20-inch honeycomb-style wheels with the obligatory wider tires, a hood scoop, air vents and, last but not least, a duck-tail spoiler. According to the company, its interior will also be up to par, and remind many users of the original Trans Am models. Overall, this is certainly a concept which many people will be glad to see at next weeks’ SEMA show in Las Vegas. Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Mugen-tuned Honda CR-Z quite possible Posted: 28 Oct 2009 01:02 AM PDT Next year’s Honda CR-Z hybrid sports coupe is looking pretty good, and promises to deliver some respectable performance figures for a hybrid Japanese car. But it seems that Honda’s performance and tuning department, Mugen, believes that there is a lot of wasted potential in the hybrid hatchback, and says that a custom prepped version might hit the market after the release of the CR-Z, which will happen all around the world next year. Hiroki Toyoda (imagine the jokes he gets with that name), the vice president of Mugen’s European branch, revealed that there is a lot of potential in the hybrid powertrain used by the CR-Z, and that the company will study a lot of performance upgrades for it. If the Honda CR-Z has awaken your interest, would a Mugen-prepped version make you even more interested? Drop a comment with your view. Source: Autocar Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

GM to offer Wi-Fi router for specific models Posted: 28 Oct 2009 12:51 AM PDT If there’s anything you needed to do in a car, it’s surfing the net. At least this is what quite a few carmakers believe these days, with plenty offering Wi-Fi routers for models in their vehicle lineup. The latest to embark on the Internet odyssey is General Motors, who will offer to install an Autonet wireless router kit for specific models in the GMC, Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac brands. In case your car won’t be eligible, you can order it straight from the GM accessories website. Bear in mind that the installation will cost you $500 and there is a monthly subscription of $29 for 1 GB of service. In case you exceed that amount of data traffic, then the service stops. There is a 5 GB plan, but as you guessed it, costs more. The router will broadcast the Wi-Fi signal withing 150 feet of your car, but the signal won’t be encrypted, meaning anyone can use it as long as they stay around your car. Do you think that the offer of in-car Internet is a good thing. While other passengers can check their email accounts, the driver can listen their favorite Internet radio station. GM’s Bob Lutz challenges auto journalists to beat his Cadillac CTS-V this Thursday Posted: 27 Oct 2009 05:46 AM PDT You probably heard about this outrageous thing by now, but for those of you not in the know, GM’s vice chairman, Bob Lutz, has challenged anyone who believes they can beat him and his Cadillac CTS-V to a race, being held this Thursday at Monticello Motor Club in New York. Taking him up on this offer will be a few well known automotive journalists, but also a few regular people with their own cars. Among the competition the Caddy will be up against will be a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, a BMW M5, an Audi RS4 or a BMW M3. It’s going to be one hell of a competition, but in the end, GM’s Caddy will certainly walk away with the best reputation due to Lutz’s marketing prowess. The full list of participants can be found at this address. Click the jump to see a video of Lutz and his CTS-V preparing for the race. Thanks Carrie for the tip!
