Porsche reveals Boxster Spyder, will debut Los Angeles Auto Show, video included Posted: 06 Nov 2009 02:26 AM PST Porsche has revealed yesterday that its Boxster lineup will receive a brand new model next year, the Spyder convertible, which will make its first appearance at December’s Los Angeles Motor Show in California. Described by Porsche in three words: “light, efficient, open” the new Boxster spider will have a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine, which will produce 320 HP, beating the Boxster S’ 310 output. Porsche’s already famous PDK gearbox will be offered as an option, making the car spring from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.8 seconds, and to a top speed of 267 km/h (166 mph). What’s more interesting is that it will support such a speed with the roof down. Even more attractive is that it will consume just 9.3 liters/100 km (that’s 30.4 mph) in the New European driving cycle benchmark (NEDC) Don’t go thinking that switching the roof with a soft top one would make the new Boxster fatter, as Porsche boasts that at a weight of 1,275 kg (2,811 lbs) is the lightest in the whole vehicle lineup. An all new sports suspension has been added, as well as new styling touches like revamped front and rear bumpers, 10-spoke alloy wheels and new air intakes. on the inside, the new sport seats awaits the drive, as well as sill plates with Boxster Spyder inscriber on them. The new car, as I’ve said, will debut in December in Los Angeles, and go on sale in February 2010, for around €53,100 ( around $79,000). You can hit the jump to see the promotional video that the German company released for this model.

Ford unveils inflatable seat belts, adds airbag-like protection to rear seat passengers Posted: 06 Nov 2009 02:03 AM PST Car safety regulations led to vehicles becoming filled with various types of technologies designed to keep us safe in the worst possible scenarios. One of the most popular type of system is the airbag, which has been incorporated in almost every nook and cranny, protecting the front passengers from almost any type of impact. But there hasn’t been a lot of breakthrough technologies for the passengers in the rear, which most of the times are children or elderly people, for which a seat belt can cause more harm than good in case of an accident. That’s why Ford has just unveiled its inflatable seat belt technology, which incorporates an air bag into the belts worn by the occupants of the rear seats.
The technology allows the airbags to appear in just 40 milliseconds after the crash, and, as Ford has highlighted, can’t cause any harm to the passengers, even if a child would doze off with his head on the belt. The American company revealed that the system will be fitted to the upcoming Ford Explorer, and that it plans to offer it to all of its vehicles in the following year. The whole technical details are available at Ford’s website, but you can hit the jump and watch the video which demonstrates the new inflatable seat belts in action.

Michael Schumacher drives a bartender in a Maserati, proves drinking and driving don’t mix Posted: 06 Nov 2009 01:40 AM PST Drinking and driving is one of the worst things you can do if you own a car. As such, there have been plenty of campaigns which have tried, sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding, to get people aware of the deadly implications of this crime. But the latest ad for Bacardi Limited opted to take a more tongue-in-cheek approach, by making famous bartender Salvatore Calabrese attempt to make a cocktail. Fine, but what does that have to do with driving? Well he needed to create the drink while in the passenger seat of a beatiful Maserati GranTurismo S, driven by none other than seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher. Needless to say, the German driver went all out and the cocktail ended up all over the Italian sports car. Hit the jump to see the video of how it all went down.

Nissan GT-R and Maserati MC-12 might enter the 2010 Le Mans race Posted: 06 Nov 2009 01:27 AM PST If things go smoothly, it would seem that a battle which many would want to happen, between the Nissan GT-R and Maserati MC-12 and all of the other GT cars at Le Mans might happen. But first, a brief history lesson as to why this didn’t happen yet. There are two racing bodies governing motorsport, FIA, which deals with Formula 1 and many other competitions, and ACO, which deals with Le Mans in particular. Up until now, cars like the Nissan GT-R or Maserati MC-12 weren’t accepted in the prestigious race because of the rules that ACO followed. But the racing body is preparing to adopt the FIA GT1 regulations, which will allow things like the Maserati’s carbon fiber chassis in the race. This means that Gigawave Motorsport, the team which has been running a customized version of the Nissan GT-R in FIA GT, and Vitaphone, which represents Maserati in the same competition will enter the prestigious 24 hours of Le Mans race and take on models from Audi, Ferrari or other competitors. Are you excited about such a possibility? Leave a comment with your thoughts. Source: AutoSport via Autoblog Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Skoda will release a low-cost sedan soon, company president says Posted: 06 Nov 2009 12:53 AM PST In a move which makes sense given the current economic climate and the reputation of the Skoda brand, its president, Reinhard Jung, has declared that there are plans to release a low-cost sedan which will sit right between the Fabia hatchback and the Octavia saloon in terms of price. What’s more interesting is that Jung also revealed that the new model will rival the Dacia Logan, which is my personal car. Should we expect a battle between Skoda and one of the unofficial RPMGo cars? Who knows. But seriously, the executive revealed that parts for the new sedan will be taken from the Fabia and the Octavia, thus preventing any unnecessary costs. It is expected that it will cost somewhere around €10,000, when it will be released, either in late 2010 or 2011. Don’t forget that after parent company Volkswagen will release the Up! city car, Skoda might also market its own take on the platform, as well as other companies in the group, like Seat. You should also bear into consideration the promise that Skoda’s chief designer made, that all future models will have a more aggressive personality in order to stand out. Do you think that such a plan is viable for Skoda or should it focus on the current reasonably-priced cars it has? Leave a comment with your view on the matter. Suzuki CEO denies any deal between his company and Volkswagen Posted: 06 Nov 2009 12:16 AM PST Lately in the automotive industry plenty of rumors have appeared about Volkswagen wanting to get in the Asian market, and as such plans to buy shares in a carmaker from that continent. While some rumors pegged the financially struggling Ssangyong to be the target, others focused on Suzuki. The latter is pure make-believe, at least according to Osamu Suzuki, the CEO of the automaker, which released a statement about all of the speculations. “There’s a saying that there’s no smoke where there’s no fire, but you’re all creating smoke where there’s no fire in this case. There’s been nothing on this (Volkswagen ties) from our side.” While it may seem pretty simple, one thing is for certain, Volkswagen does want to expand into the Asian continent, partly because of China, and will search for any viable target in order to do so. Do you have any suggestions for the German company? Leave a comment and discuss. Source: AutomotiveNews (subscription required) via Autoblog Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Hummer brings wide array of customized H3 models to SEMA Posted: 06 Nov 2009 12:00 AM PST While it may soon be changing owners, after GM sold it to Chinese company Sichuan Tengzhong, Hummer will be bringing quite a lot of interesting special models to the SEMA Show, which is currently going on in Las Vegas. The H3 is the base for all of the following special editions, but there will be certainly many other models on display at the Nevada convention. Starting off the attack is two concepts straight from GM, H3 Moab and H3T Sportsman. The first, as its names suggests is inspire by famous off road trail the Moab rim, and is powered by the H3 Alpha V8 engine, developing 300 HP (221 kW). Its new accesories include a Rancho 4-inch front suspension lift, a custom spring-over conversion in the rear, a set of massive 35-inch BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain KM2 tires and, just to be on the safe side, a beefed up underbody shield to protect from that rought terrain. Of course in order to look the part GM fitted a Gobi Ranger roof basket with four off-road lamps, the front bumper received lower grille lamps in the front, and the front and rear received two cameras so that you can observe your surroundings. For those of you who just want a bit of an extra performance but still plan to take the Hummer in mildly off road conditions, the H3T Sportsman is for you. Powered by the same Alpha V8, it received an extra 70 HP due to new LS2 cylinder heads and a few extra tweaks. A body color-coded upper grille is installed, as well as a matte finish fuel door, storage boxes on the right and left side of the pick up bed and special floor mats and seat covers. The Hummer booth will also be host to two special models, one made by Dakar stage winner Robby Gordon, which boasts a special chassis with racing suspension but also air conditioning and windows all around, powered by a V8 engine. The second Hummer comes from Rod Hall Racing, which transformed the H3 Alpha into a desert racer, thanks to new suspension bushings, wiring and exhaust systems. The model is set to be raced by Chad Hall in the 2009 SCORE International Baja 1000 competition. Even though the Chinese will now own Hummer, it’s nice to see that the appetite for customization hasn’t decreased already. Source: WorldCarFans Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Toyota reveals unique Midnight Rider Tundra Tailgater at SEMA Posted: 05 Nov 2009 11:38 PM PST I know I’ve been posting tuning and customization articles left and right but they will come to an end, as the SEMA Show in Las Vegas wraps out today. Until then, this special edition Toyota Tundra dubbed Midnight Rider Tailgater is just too good to pass up. In honor of the famous country duo Brooks & Dunn going on their farewell tour, Toyota commissioned tuning firm The B.A.D. Company to make a one of a kind model out of their Tundra V8 pick-up truck. The result? As you can see in the picture, a perfect vehicle for a dedicate tailgate party. You’ve got everything from a pull-out Grill N Chill with the adjacent cooking space, a tap for your beverage of choice, an ice chest to keep you cool and, in case you don’t want the grill to get all messy, an infrared barbecue But cooking isn’t the only thing you can do with this special model, as a massive 42-inch flat screen TV is installed in the bed of the pick-up, as well as a Kicker sound system with two subwoofers and amplifiers. Other trinkets include the silver western-engraved door handles, a customized Brooks & Dunn license plate, a set of 20-inch Mickey Thompson “Classic Lock” aluminum wheels and special black leather trim seats. Either way, this is truly a testament to how far people will go to throw the perfect party, right in the back of their own truck. What do you think? Leave a comment about this feat of Yankee ingenuity. Source: WorldCarFans Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

SpeedART details its performance packages for the Porsche Panamera Turbo Posted: 05 Nov 2009 11:24 PM PST Where plenty of people saw a sacrilege to the brand, many customization companies saw a blank canvas perfect to squeeze money out of. In case you didn’t realize, I’m talking about the Porsche Panamera, which has seen quite a lot of tuning attempts since it was released. The latest company to make its intentions public is SpeedART, which has detailed its two performance and styling packages for the Porsche Panamera Turbo ahead of their release at the Essen Motor Show, which is going on at the beginning of December.
