New NHTSA study says hybrids have higher crash rates with pedestrians and cyclists Posted: 11 Nov 2009 12:08 AM PST The hybrid vehicle scene has been host to quite a heated debate over whether or not the cars would be outfitted with sound systems so that they will let others know about their presence. Several cases of pedestrians or cyclists not hearing hybrids have been invoked, but no concrete studies were made. That is, until now, as the Nation Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has revealed a new one, which has indeed found that hybrids are more frequently involved in accidents with pedestrians and bicyclists. According to the data, 77 of 8,387 hybrid vehicles (0.9 %) have bene involved in accidents with pedestrians while 48 (0.6%) in ones with bicyclists. As a comparison, 3,578 of 559,703 normal vehicles (0.6%) were involved in pedestrian accidents, while 1,862 (0.3%) with cyclists. While additional research is needed, as NHTSA revealed, this study should offer an insight into what strategies should hybrid carmakers adopt in the future. Until then, pedestrians and cyclists should make a run for it they see any hybrids approaching (just kidding). Source: Autoblog Post published on Rpmgo.com Related posts:

Volvo reveals first pictures of the new S60, will debut it in Geneva Posted: 10 Nov 2009 11:53 PM PST Lately much of the news concerning Volvo were about its imminent departure from Ford, who will sell it, if everything goes according to plan, to the Chinese carmaker Geely. But that hasn’t stopped the engineers from the Swedish automaker from working, as the company has released the first two pictures of the new S60 model, based heavily on the S60 Concept which was teased at the Detroit Motor Show. “The all-new Volvo S60 is sculpted to move you,” said Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “It looks and drives like no other Volvo before and the car’s technology will help you to be safer and more confident behind the wheel.” Of course, as it is normal for the Swedish manufacturer, the safety side of the S60 is the most important one, as it will feature the new Pedestrian Detection system, on which we showed you a video some time ago. In case you don’t remember, it will (drumroll please) detect pedestrians and, if the driver doesn’t do so, will apply the brakes. This safety first strategy was highlighted by Volvo’s Senior Safety Advisor Thomas Broberg which said that: “Our aim for 2020 is that no-one should be killed or seriously injured in a Volvo.” The company also revealed that the official debut will be made at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. Citroen to release the C-Zero all electric car in late 2010, video included Posted: 10 Nov 2009 11:39 PM PST Not to be outdone by fellow French rival Renault, Citroen has just announced the C-Zero electric vehicle, which will be based on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, continuing the strong collaboration between the PSA Peugeot Citroen alliance and the Japanese carmaker. Of course, as you can see, it will be a city car, outfitted with a 47kW (64 HP) permanent magnet synchronous motor, which can deliver a torque of 180 Nm between 0 and 2,000 rpm. It will be powered by a 330 volt lithium-ion battery which can be recharged in 6 hours from a normal 220V home power socker or 30 minutes from a special 400V station. The engine will power the rear wheels through a single-speed reduction gear, allowing the car to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 15 seconds and up to 130 km (80 miles). In order to help drivers, Citroen will also outfit a beeper which will let him know when it is turned on. Expect other features like ABS, electric windows, A/C or ESP to be incorporated. The Citroen C-Zero is set to go on sale during the end of 2010, and will be followed in 2011 by a full-hybrid DS5 model. Hit the jump to see the new model in a video released by Citroen.

Formula 1 driver Rubens Barrichello to get half a million dollars in damages from Google Posted: 10 Nov 2009 11:21 PM PST Well this is something you don’t hear everyday, reputed Formula 1 driver Rubens Barrichello has recently sued software giant Google due to its social networking website Orkut, which is extremely popular in South America, especially Barrichello’s native Brazil. Given that he is a “bit” well known there, many fans have created fake profile pages which caused a fair amount of controversy, not to mention staining his popularity in South America. He immediately asked Google to delete the profile pages, but when the corporation declined, he went to court. It now seems that the trial has taken place, and the judge issued Google to pay $500,000 in damages to the Brazilian driver. Don’t go thinking he will spend them on a new swimming pool or something like that, as he will donate it to his own charity, Instituto Barrichello Kanaan, which will help children. Given the popularity of social networks all around the world, be it Facebook or something else, I think this should be warning to the companies which run them as to be more careful in deleting accounts, as to not pay a hefty price afterwards.
